Melbourne footy boss Alan Richardson says the retirement of Angus Brayshaw caught the club, and player, by surprise.

Richardson told RSN the premiership player was "basically picked to play" against Richmond earlier this month, but a final scan "changed things" regarding his future.

"It was bloody difficult," he said.
