Cam Luke

FLEMINGTON

Race 2 | 3. Makdane

Has the perfect draw to have run of the race smack bang on the back of the leader. Second crack at the 2000m suits him perfectly and I thought he was pretty good last start behind a really nice horse. He gets track conditions to suit and he most certainly is the one to beat. I really like him to kickstart Cup day in a big way.

Race 3 | 9. Arabian Prince

He goes back to the 1800m down from 2000m that I would be a little concerned about if those other races weren’t run ridiculously slow. On paper this race looks like they will go a lot faster with a few who can push forward. (Champagne Hero (drawn wide / Brave Danza / Aitu/ Luna Bay) He was the first emergency for the Derby on Saturday and I felt he probably could’ve equipped himself well and this is a nice race down in class. We will know by the 1400m if the pace is on and if it is, he will be too good!!

Race 4 | 4. Street Artist

Has not been on Heavy but soft doesn’t bother him! He is a simple speedster and back to 1000m. Has been down the straight before on debut but was 1200m. Little freshen and back to 1000m today is key! I think he will be hard to beat! Pallaton comes out of better races in Sydney but 1200m back to 1000m on a short back up makes me wary so I’m with the 1000m specialist Street Artist.

Race 6 | 3. Kingswood & 6. Athanatos (both win + 3/6 excacta & quinella)
Was great resuming behind Golden Path two starts back and then had chances but track might have been a tad firm behind Lindermann and Attrition. Back to Flem for only second time I think works a does rain as he gets a little older. Will get absolute run of the race from that gate and Johnny Allen gets more out of him than any other jockey.

If Kingswood doesn’t win, Athanatos will. Was huge on the Toorak where the form has stacked up incredibly well! He won’t have a problem with the 1800m and he never runs a bad race! Add in that he likes Flemington. I have had the bigger bet on Kingswood due to the speed map from the barrier and I have a very small query on this bloke in the wet but the sample size is small.

Melbourne Cup

Won’t be breaking the bank in one of the most open Cups I can recall for a little while. No future plays unlike previous years either! Will be wider in the quaddie as well but these three will have money on them!

1. AL Riffa (Win)
Absolute class horse in the field hence 59kg which hasn’t been carried to win in a LONG LONG time! In saying that they knew what he would get and they still brought him here. His trainer is a freak and has two cups before so need respect him no end. Wet no dramas and I don’t expect the 3200m to hurt him either. In form superstar jockey on his back who knows what it takes to win this!!

10. Flatten The Curve (each way)
Including this German visitor as he loves the slop and runs 3200m on his year! I’m not sure of his class at this level and he will be a long way back but he will pass many in the straight and that’s why I’ve included him in my exotics.

14. Half Yours (win)
Caulfield Cup always a great guide and no better than winning it! Will appreciate for wet and drawn nicely to find the fence early. Don’t expect Jamie Melham to have him as close as in the Caulfield Cup! He really relaxes in his races which you need to go to win this race and make sure you run the distance. He hasn’t been this far yet but again I think that won’t be what beats him! The speed in the CC helps me think he will get 3200m today and be in the finish.

22. Royal Supremacy (each way)
Winner of the Metrop two back on a long long sustained run and then was good in the Caulfield Cup which I dare say was a tick over run! He will appreciate the give in the ground and even chopped up more helps him! Will settle a long way back but can pick them off in the straight and Maher always has a horse who runs well and I think this year it is this bloke.

Also - 1 and 14 (top 6) 10 and 22 (top 8).

Race 8 | 2. Navy Pilot

Ran well in the Guineas albeit don’t think he ran a strong 1600m! 1400m here feels lovely and J Mac won’t have to do a thing from that gate! Can stalk the speed! Toe into the ground won’t slow him up and I think he is a horse who is a half tier below G1 and I think this race is exactly that!!

Race 9 | 14. Pondalowie (each-way)
The last time this girl had a nice gate it was three runs back here at Flemington over 1400m and finished on the back of cafe millennium, transatlantic and Rise At Dawn and beat home Warnie and Athanatos. That’s great form for this. She can get a little squeeze hopefully and be closer to the speed than lately. She has shown early gate speed before so hoping it works here!! She is drawn lovely and soft track not a concern but not sure about Heavy!! Either way she is over the odds at $16 and a great each way play!!

Race 10 | 3. Ndola

I really liked him last prep in a couple of really good 3yo races and Flemington suits him. Staying at the 1400m is ok as again speed will help him and he even though he is probably better on a good track, he has won well with a tow in the ground before. Also runs well 3rd up and Stable is going well. With Sabaj not here now; he is the one to beat!

David Taggart

FLEMINGTON

Race 2 | 3. Makdane

Is going to get all the favours here from pole and if the track is soft that is his best racing conditions. Has only missed top three once in 10 runs, Williams rides and hasn’t missed top three on him from six rides. Always competitive in this grade too.

Race 3 | 9. Arabian Prince

In all his three runs to date he hasn’t been far off some handy gallopers. On debut was beaten a long neck behind the Derby runner up Arcora here on a soft track. Has since finished on their heels in better races and should have these covered.

Race 5 | 3. Don Diego De Vega

Is going to appreciate the sting out of the ground and he will do no work throughout as he draws pole. Has been racing and been competitive in much stronger company to this and it’s just about him running the trip out.

Melbourne Cup

6. Presage Nocturne

The French galloper was very good in the Caulfield Cup and he comes right into this now given the rain as he’s best on soft ground. Draws outside of the fav in nine to stalk it everywhere he goes and get last crack. Has won over 3000m and this big grey ticks many boxes.

Race 9 | 15. Surfin' Bird

Was one of the wins of the Caulfield carnival in what was only a BM70 but it was how she did it and ran time. Will handle the soft and will dictate the race. Drops in weight but does go up significantly in grade but looks a progressive type.

RANDWICK

Race 3 | 6. Carbonados

Resumes and he always races well fresh. Has trialled up well and he draws soft for Nash to put him in a good position. Conditions suit and he can go close.

Race 4 | 6. Maid Of Moolah

Is a great each-way play here and she’s looking to remain undefeated this prep. Draws soft and she could easily control the race if not box seat and track up the fav.

Race 6 | 1. Gallant Star

Just missed out first up in the Kosciusko beaten by the very handy Clear Thinking. Best runs are when fresh and second up and he draws soft to get the run of the race. Gets a huge claim for Sienna who is looking for her biggest win to date.

Race 8 | 1. Dragonstone (value)

Has been racing against the best sprinters in all his runs this prep and he will find this significantly easier to that. He draws good, gets a claim and loves a wet deck. He’s a great each-way play.
