"She’s the most famous person in the country right now.”
Legendary broadcaster Gerard Whateley has hailed Jamie Melham as 'the most famous person in the country' after completing an historic Caulfield and Melbourne Cups double!
Melham becomes the first woman to complete the double, and the first woman to win the Melbourne Cup (second in history) since Michelle Payne in 2015.

Whateley emphasised the brevity of the feat we witnessed at Flemington today.
"She was in tears from the moment she entered the walk of roses," Whateley said on SEN.
"That is the dream fully realised and the history is not at all lost on her.
"She’s the most famous person in the country right now. She is leading the new generation.
"She talks about young girls that idolise her and she understands that role.
"To win the Cup double, this really is phenomenal. An unforgettable Cup, rich for the owners and the horse."
Melham's father John Kah expressed how much this moment means to him and his family.
“What joy, what a joy,” he said.
“This is our great race and it’s so special to win it. Incredible moment.
“When we grew up the Melbourne Cup was everything. For me, to be able to win it, for us to win it. It’s just amazing.”
While her mother, three-time Olympian Karen Gardiner-Kah, emotionally paid tribute to her daughter.
“She was stuck half way and I thought she's not going to get through... then the angels above just carried her over,” she said on Channel 9's coverage.
“She got picked up and carried over the line. I couldn't believe it.”
