Best still to come for “immature” yet “exciting” Sabaj

Next up could be a $2m race.

Sabaj is slowly turning into an elite horse, now having five wins from eight starts.

The four-year-old which has won $550,145 in prize money most recently won the Cranbourne Cup (1600m), setting a track record.

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr trained-gelding has only missed the placings once in his eight-start career, and he still has plenty of improvement to come, according to Kent Jr.

“We’re very lucky to have him. Nothing has really gone right in all of his runs, he hasn’t had a perfect run in transit yet,” the co-trainer told RSN’s Correct Weight.

“He’s so immature still, if you saw him in the yard yesterday, he’s very narrow and gangly and yet to fill out – that’s what’s exciting.

“The best is way ahead of him. He’s got a turn of foot, he can sustain a run, he’s got a wicked action.

“He’s clearly a winner in his career so far, he’s yet to run a bad race. So, he’s one of those horses you can really trust.

“He can be much better on bigger tracks like Flemington and Randwick.

“He’s very exciting.”

With three runs under his preparation so far, Kent Jr revealed that they will potentially target the $2 million Group 2 Ingham (1600m) at Randwick on December 13.

“We are very much keeping an open mind,” Kent Jr said.

“He’s pulled up super, he didn’t leave much feed and looked great in the body this morning.

“We’re gonna keep the door ajar on the Ingham which is in three weeks' time.

“It’s a pretty cool race – a Group 2, a handicap on the big Randwick mile track.

“He’s second favourite there at the moment, he’s gonna get in with 53kg against Gringotts who will probably get 61kg.

“For $2 million it will be heavily considered.”

Sabaj is currently $3.70 with Sportsbet for the Ingham, behind favourite Gringotts at $2.50.
