It's Fangirl vs Pride Of Jenni in the Empire Rose.
Is it D-Day for Fangirl on Saturday?
That is the question which was posed to Jason Richardson and Lizzie Jelfs by a listener through the SMS machine on SENTrack & RSN’s Get On.
Fangirl is currently the $4.20 favourite with Sportsbet to take out the Group 1 Empire Rose on Saturday (1600m).
Yet the seven-year-old mare is coming off a sixth-place finish in the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1609m).
The Chris Waller-trained bay will now be fourth-up in her preparation and questions are being asked about her ability to compete at the top level, especially against Pride Of Jenni.
“That’s an interesting question,” Richo said.
“Fangirl versus Pride Of Jenni.
“Fangirl defeated her last start (in the King Charles) - they came sixth and seventh – but she (Fangirl) eventually got past her (Pride Of Jenni).
“But it’s the fact that Pride Of Jenni went in the race and put Fangirl in a little bit of a hurt locker early and whether that means she is no longer a winning chance – I think that’s harsh because now she comes back to mare’s Group 1 grade.”
With Richo firmly believing that Fangirl isn’t finished just yet, Jelfs echoed that sentiment, however, still feels like Pride Of Jenni will “out-slay” the backmarker.
Jelfs: “If both of them turn up on their best – I think that’s how you have to assess it – I see Jenni out-slaying a horse like Fangirl.”
“Because I feel like she (Fangirl) has to have everything go her way.
Richo: “Do you question her intestinal fortitude, Fangirl?
Jelfs: “No, not at all, because she is a very talented mare, but she can be beaten – both of them can be beaten.
“Jenni’s on the track, she’s in the place that she loves and dominates, and no one pressures her, how do they get past her?”
