Speed Ready For Spring

Southern Speed will take the first steps toward her defence of the Caulfield Cup with a gallop between races at Morphettville on Saturday.

Despite being trained on the track, trainer Leon MacDonald beleives the race day atmosphere will be beneficial to her progression. "She'll have a gallop between races at Morphettville on Saturday and that should stir her up ahead of the Spring Stakes the following week", MacDonald told Shane Anderson on Racing Ahead this morning. "She's wound up and I expect her to sprint very well fresh Saturday week."

MacDonald added the Southern Speed had spelled very well since her brief autumn campaign and admitted the handicapper would have the final say in what direction she heads. "She's had a really good spell, filled out even more and I think she could be even better this time around", MacDonald said.

"Ultimately I'd love to run in the Caulfield Cup again, but it is all going to depend on what weight she gets,so we may head down the WFA path and tackle the Cox Plate."
