Possible Shift For Adelaide Cup

Thoroughbred Racing SA and the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) have welcomed a Review of South Australian Major Events which has recommended shifting the June public holiday to May. This, in turn, will enable the Adelaide Cup to return to May, possibly as early as 2014 after eight years of the event being held in March.

SAJC CEO Brenton Wilkinson said the shifting of the Adelaide Cup could be a positive move for racing in South Australia. "All the research we've done on the Adelaide Cup has proven that it needs to be run on a public holiday", Wilkinson told Shane Anderson on Racing Ahead this morning.

"We have found in our experience that running it on Labour Day we're are not getting the volume of acceptors due to Super Saturday two days before. We believe a shift of the dates will encourage trainers to target the race."
