Racing & Sports expert selections.
RACE 1 - Plenty of debutants engaged but we'll go with the race experience of DREAM SMART (9) who box-seated and looked to have every chance when fourth over 1200m at Eagle Farm last start. Freshened up to come back to 1000m which looks a better trip. Major player with the help of a nice gate. WEATHER (7) battled on evenly without threatening first-up over this course and distance four weeks ago. Draws in closer and will strip fitter so expect sharp improvement. HEART AND SPIRIT (10) has not been produced since finishing a distant fifth over 1110m at Doomben in April. Won a recent trial in good style so looks set for a bright return. SIDLED (17) led but knocked up at the end of 1200m at Toowoomba last start. Might give some cheek coming back in distance. TIPSY TIGER (13) for Gollan and Jones looks the pick of the first starters. Betting the key.
RACE 2 - MISTER BIANCO (2) followed an eye-catcher on debut at Eagle Farm with a determined win as $1.45 favourite over 1350m at Ipswich last start. Coming along nicely and can take this next step. ENTERPRISE DEFENCE (1) went back before making some late ground to finish fourth last time out over 1350m at Doomben. Gets some nice weight relief with the 3kg claim and this roomier track will suit his racing style. OUTTA CONTROL (6) met with little support on debut at Toowoomba but stormed home to just get up at the end of 1200m. Obviously better than they thought and out to this trip poses a serious threat. THE SUN DANCE (4) won on debut over 1000m here recently and hit the line like a horse that will relish this longer trip. ELECTRIC BRAE (8) resumes. Trialling well and with the light weight is a top three chance.
RACE 3 - CABOCHE (3) is progressing well this prep and put the writing on the wall last start when he worked home impressively to get up for second over 2020m at Doomben. Perfectly placed over the extra trip at this stage of the prep. Clearly the one to beat. TAPPY'S LAD (8) wound up in good fashion and wasn't beaten far last Saturday in a BM78 over this trip at Doomben. Up in grade but drops significantly in the weights. Hasn't won for 66 weeks but is sure to prove tough to hold out. SNEAK PREVIEW (1) appreciated the step up in distance when just behind the placegetters over 2020m at Doomben recently. Races well here so although a little query at the trip he comes right under notice. TAPILDOODLEDO (5) dropped in class and returned to form over this trip at Eagle Farm three weeks ago. Has been up for a while but the last effort was encouraging. ROGUE BEAR (2) closed hard to defeat Caboche at Doomben last time. Getting up in the weights but there might be improvement still to come.
RACE 4 - Genuine mare DENIED (1) continued her excellent form last start when she led and battled on well for second over 1350m at Ipswich. Finds a slightly easier race today. Just needs a bit of luck from the sticky gate to give this a mighty shake. MASTER SHOWMAN (2) returned from a six-month spell successfully for new trainer Stuart Kendrick over 1100m at Ipswich last time out. Generally holds the form second-up and the extra trip is no problem. Major player again. TRANQUIL BAY (9) did her best work late but just missed the placings when fresh from a spell over 1200m at Doomben a fortnight ago. Loves this circuit and has won twice when second-up in the past. Sure to play a prominent role. TATTLE (16) stalked the pace but lacked the turn of foot required when resuming over 1200m at Eagle Farm recently. Likely improver out to this trip with the run under the belt. HOOT 'N' HOLLER (11) is hard to catch but she gets in very well today with the 53kgs.
RACE 5 - COUNTER (2) made it two wins from the last three starts when he ground home a shade too well at the end of 2020m at Doomben a fortnight ago. Coming back in trip is a query but trust Waller has pulled the right rein. ZAPHOD (5) was impressive first-up at Scone then met with solid support but tired late in the race won by Kissed By Evie over 1800m at Eagle Farm last time out. Lightly raced northern hemisphere bred gelding who should enjoy getting out to this trip for the first time and can do a lot better. KISSED BY EVIE (7) is a progressive mare who registered her third win in only seven starts when she easily accounted for three-year-olds over 1800m at Eagle Farm last start. Gives every indication she will handle the extra trip. SUPER CHILLED (8) gave away a big start but sprouted wings to get up over the mile at Doomben last Saturday. Meets some better types here but she is capable of a similar performance out to this journey. HECTOR DE MARIS (3) is best of the others.
RACE 6 - DEEPOUR (3) wasn't far away in three black-type races to kick off this prep then dropped in grade and was beaten narrowly last time over 1350m at Doomben. Faces a similar assignment today and races well here. The one to beat out of the inside gate. LEGAL ESPRIT (1) returned from a 19-week spell with an eye-catching second over 1200m at Eagle Farm. Boasts a strong second-up record of five top-three finishes from six attempts. A clever claim brings him in beautifully. ATMOSPHERE (8) didn't appreciate going back in trip last start when a tiring favourite at Doomben. Returned an excellent figure over this trip the run prior - can win with a repeat of that effort. ESSONNE (4) is racing well including a placing at Listed level over 1400m in late June. Major player with just 54.5kgs after the claim. CHATTY LADY (5) was fair first-up at Eagle Farm but is expected to improve over more ground this time.
RACE 7 - Interesting move to bring OLD SONG (14) back from 2200m last start to seven furlongs. Attacked the line well on the last occasion at this track behind subsequent Saturday winner Glen Massey. Is a winner at the trip and likes this circuit. Will get back but watch for her late. READY AZZ EVA (4) was hard to miss last start over 1350m at Doomben, rattling home from near the tail to be beaten a head in a BM68. Strips fitter and will be hard to hold out on this roomier circuit. BETTER BE NORDY (9) had seven-weeks between runs before his last start sixth over 1100m at Ipswich. Fitter for that hit-out and is looking for this distance now. RIMBAUD (6) scored a big win over today's journey two runs ago then struggled going back in trip last start. Draws well and is a threat back up to 1400m. LOOSE UNIT (21) has won just once but has an incredible 17 minor placings from 22 starts, including the last four. In the top three 14/16 here so difficult to leave out.
RACE 8 - FEMME FATALE (12) travelled up on the speed and boxed on well to hold second last start over 1200m at Doomben. Twice a winner at this course and distance - her best form comes at 1000m. Big chance with a pinch of luck required from an awkward gate. SPIRIT QUEEN (4) made it four top-three finishes from as many runs this prep when she worked home well for third over 1200m at Eagle Farm three weeks ago. Unbeaten here at five furlongs. Another who can win but needs the gods to be smiling from a wide alley. AVONE (15) started favourite but might have been a run short when out of the money over 1200m at Doomben a fortnight ago. Query at 1000m but has a black-type placing to her name so she has the class to test this field. TERMAGANT (14) made it a hat trick and two from two this prep when she stormed home to score narrowly here at this trip last start. Up sharply in weight but is going ahead in leaps and bounds. SHOT OF WHISKEY (8) is up in class but impossible to fault this prep.
RACE 9 - IMMORAL (7) tackled the Kirby Quality over this distance at Grafton during the recent carnival and did a reasonable job to finish third. Back in grade today and re-unites with Jimmy Orman who gets the best out of this gelding. Just needs things to go right from an awkward gate to play a huge role. LIQUOR (11) was given a seven-week let-up before turning her form around at Doomben last start, leading all the way to win with a bit in hand at the end of 1110m. Meets a deeper field this time but with 4kgs less and an inside stall she is right in the picture. RALPHIE (9) never looked likely last Saturday over 1110m at Doomben. Best form comes at this trip and he is twice a winner here. Can bounce back. RICHON (4) ran a cheeky race at huge odds in the Ramornie at Grafton recently. The winner of 3/4 at this trip so he will be tough to catch with the advantage of the inside gate. HATCHET (2) may find this a bit sharp but can run on into the placings.
RACE 10 - MORE TROUBLE (14) raced handy and tried hard but just laboured late under 58kgs over this trip at Doomben last start. Has won here at the mile and was only beaten four lengths in the Winx Guineas at this track and trip off an eight-week break two starts ago. Big chance down in the weights. CRANKY HARRY (1) led and lengthened impressively to easily account for a Randwick Highway field over 1600m at his latest appearance. Relished that first try at the mile and will give them something to catch again. CUNNAMULLA FELLA (6) was lining up for the hat trick but found Madame Odette a shade too strong over this journey at Doomben a fortnight ago. Consistent gelding who gets in nicely after the claim and should be about the money again. TYNDRUM GOLD (10) hadn't raced for eight weeks before his close eighth over 1666m at Ipswich last start. Lightly raced four-year-old who can improve sharply off that run. THESECONDATPORTSEA (11) just missed first-up at Ipswich and can easily go one better.
