It's Tasmania's premier sprint race year in and year out, and on Wednesday night, the $150,000 Listed Jacksons Security Tasmanian Newmarket (1200m) in Launceston is no exception.
The race is headed by the 'little champ' The Inevitable, who won the race two years ago and will tackle the 1200m fresh from a break; last year's winner, First Accused, up-and comer Thespian Waters, Geegees Gemstone and Alvarhino, to name just a handful.
A full field of 14 will face the starter with two emergencies named, and the rail is back to the true position.
First Accused, recently named the Ladbrokes Horse of the Year for the 23/24 season, has taken a slightly different approach to go back-to-back.
"His work has been really good. We've had the blinkers on him and had a gallop, and we're happy with that. He went to an arena the other day, and he's done some arena work and a bit of show jumping, and he is very well," trainer Glenn Stevenson said.
Craig Newitt will ride The Inevitable, who has drawn barrier two; the 9YO hasn't raced since a winter campaign in Queensland.
"They will know he's about," the champion jockey said.
A first or second place would take The Inevitable's stake earnings past $2 million.
Thespian Waters created a huge impression with a last-to-first effort to win the (1100m) Goodwood Hcp in Hobart, beating a field not far short of Newmarket quality. He has drawn toward the outside in barrier 10.
"Barrier isn't too much of a concern; he appreciates some room. He worked on the grass during the week, and it was lovely work," said trainer Siggy Carr, who will also saddle up Ms Tasmania, one of the top hopes in the $125,000 3yo Cup.
Geegees Gemstone has been threatening to win a good race for some time, and he was one of the luckless runners in the Goodwood.
"He pulled up really well, pretty much untested in that event, he feels good, his work has been super since, we are just hoping for some clear running, and he should be finishing off strongly," Trainer Stuart Gandy said.
Adam Trinder will saddle up Jaguar Stone and Bello Beau; both come through the Goodwood; Bello Beau finished ninth and Jaguar Stone third. Stable apprentice Erica Byrne Burke has the ride on Jaguar Stone.
"Her work has been really good at home, so hopefully, she will be competitive again," The Irish-born apprentice said.
Imogen Miller has her underrated mare Alvarhino, And Beyond, and Kaliuwaa Falls in the race; her fourth entry, Just A Needs, is the first emergency.
My two best bets come late in the program: Silver Dagger in race seven and In The Ocean in the last.
Matt Reid and Duncan Dornauf will be trackside for Tasracing Live for what promises to be a great night of thoroughbred racing.
