Horror debut for Sydney Cup winner over the jumps

It has not been a successful debut for former Sydney Cup winner Stand To Gain over the hurdles at Bendigo today.

After struggling for form over the Sydney Autumn Carnival, trainer Robert Smerdon had decided to try the jumps.

He had finished second in two trials, so the confidence was high in the stable going into the 3200 metre hurdle race.

But jockey Steven Pateman was forced to ease Stand To Gain out of the race not long after the 600 metre mark.

A post race veterinarian inspection discovered signs of a respiratory infection.
