He may just be magic

Former New Zealand galloper Maythehorsebemagic made an impressive start to his Australian career by taking out the $30,000 JRA Handicap (2400m) at Caulfield today. Sent out at $9 after being backed in from as much $13 in betting, jockey Dwayne Dunn settled Maybethehorsebemagic towards the rear of the field before getting on to the back of the favourite Almodovar on the home turn. As soon as Almodovar had claimed the lead in the home straight, Maybethehorsebemagic loomed up strongly on his outside before going straight past the favourite to record a fairly soft victory on the line. Speaking on behalf of trainer Mike Moroney, Ballymore Racing Manager Anthony Feroce said he didn't expect the seven-year-old son of Zabeel to go jumping just despite having being trained as a jumper in New Zealand previously. "We had him sent over to us about three weeks ago" Feroce said. "Last start in New Zealand he was unlucky and he only needed one more start to get into the Auckland Cup". "We thought we'd just put him in this race today and that he'd be very hard to beat".
"Once he got onto the back of the favourite he got home very nicely".
