More than $100,000 in funding will ensure that Ballarat Racecourse remains country Victoria’s premier racing venue thanks to an improved track surface and better broadcast facilities to give the region maximum exposure. Visiting Dowling Forest Racecourse, Minister for Racing Denis Napthine said the Victorian Coalition Government and racing industry joint investment would deliver a brand new Toro Groundmaster turf mower, a permanent broadcasting studio and improvements to stewards’ facilities at the racecourse. “The new mower will ensure top quality racing and training surfaces are maintained, which is vital as horses can react to inconsistencies in the length of the turf,” Dr Napthine said. “This will make for safer racing for horses and jockeys while the construction of a permanent broadcast facility will make sure Ballarat gains maximum exposure domestically and internationally. Currently the broadcaster operates from a temporary marquee which makes it difficult to deliver good exposure during inclement weather.” Dr Napthine said the Coalition Government recognised the important role racing played in regional economies and was committed to stimulating further growth in the industry. “Ballarat’s racing industry is growing at a cracking pace with two leading Melbourne training operations, Malua Racing and Jim Mason, both setting up stables here in the last twelve months,” Dr Napthine said. “This funding is about capitalising on the interest in Ballarat racing to add to the 1,300 jobs and $90 million in economic benefits the industry already delivers for the local community.”
