Hobby trainer Carson Millar is happy to just be a part of Saturday night’s Lather Up at Woodland Stud Breeders Crown final for three-year-old Colts and Geldings with Collective Works.
"It's my biggest thrill and achievement and I have only mucked around with low-level horses, and this is the first time I have stepped up against the big boys," Carson Millar said.
"It's pretty surreal actually."
Millar, 35, is a full-time train driver and was inspired by his grandfather to pursue a harness racing dream.
"My grandfather (Helmut Richert) trained many, many years ago and before I was working as a train driver I was kicking about and working for a few different stables," he said.
"I was the only one in the family to keep harness racing going in the family."
Millar has slowly built his confidence with a number of lower-grade horses and most recently with Pet Kitty - who went on a five-race winning streak.
"I started off with the claimers and patched them up and got them feeling good within themselves and they go good for you," Millar said.
"It's been where I can get them and get them going good and then turn them over.
"I want horses where I can race on your better nights like those Saturday night Melton meetings. I want to drive an hour down the road and go to Melton on your good nights instead of going three hours to Shepparton."
The Meredith horseman acquired Collective Works from New South Wales trainer-driver Rickie Alchin.
"He was actually advertised and I spoke to Rickie (Alchin) and he has been nothing but great and he said 'It will be a nice horse in time, but he needs a break' after this Breeders Crown – I am going to give him a good rest," he said.
The son out of Chloe Vargarita finished third in the second heat at Melton on Friday night, but Millar admits Saturday night's $100,000 event will be a much tougher assignment.
"I am probably going to be up against it on Saturday night, but I couldn't be happier with him and I am really looking forward to it," he said.
"With a soft draw I don't think he will be far away and can run top four."
Millar has had 39 career wins with nine coming this season.
