Group 1 winner Captain Bellasario is set to make his return to the track this Saturday night in the TAB We’re On Pace at Melton Entertainment Park.
The six-year-old's last run was on November 11 last year, and trainer Jayne Davies has had to deal with a number of injuries and setbacks to get the winner of over $150,000 back to the races.
"He has had a long break with a few problems," Davies said.
"He tied up quite badly and had a bit of muscle damage and a few other problems.
"We just put him away and gave him a good spell."
The gelding out of Bellasario has made his way back to the races via the trials.
"He has had a couple of trials (and) he ran a really quick last half in his last trial," Davies, from Cranbourne, said. "He got to the line strong."
The winner of the 2022 edition of the Group 1 Vicbred Super Series Final for four-year-old entires and geldings is capable of climbing back to elite level races, according to the 65-year-old horsewoman.
"He can pull hard and he has been settled in his two trials to date, but hopefully he can settle a bit more in his races. He has got quite a bit of potential," she said.
"He is quite a nice horse."
Captain Bellasario has drawn seven for Saturday night's $17,500 event with Jack Laugher set to pilot.
"He has drawn quite awkward in seven," she said. "We are just going to look after him and make sure he is doing his best work at the finish.
"If we could slot in somewhere that would be nice. I will just leave it up to Jack really."
Last-start Victoria Derby winner, the Emma Stewart-prepared Petracca will start from nine, while the Matthew Craven-trained Crime Writer has gate one.
The TAB We're On Pace is set to go at 6.59pm.
