Croft's connection with Markovina almost 50 years in the making

Colin Croft is hoping that Final Collect can emulate the form of his star pacer Markovina in a race named in honour of the 1978 Inter Dominion winner.

Final Collect is trained by 22-year-old Leilani Justice and will line up in TAB Markovina Free For All on Saturday night at Melton.

The now 91-year-old raced Markovina and has fond memories of his 1978 Inter Dominion heroics.

"He was a great little horse," Croft said." Markovina was just one out of the box and he was trained by Brian Gath. He was just an outright champion with Brian.

"Brian put him in the Inter Dominion here in Melbourne and I was standing with George (Gath). The way he ran that race, Brian knew every bit what that horse could do.

"That time we were racing against horses like Paleface Adios and Koala King, and they were all top horses. To watch him in that replay is astounding."

Final Collect has amassed over $135,000 in his 34 starts and Croft is confident in the future of the four-year-old.

"Final Collect is a bit of an unknown at the moment, but I believe he is going to be a very, very good horse," he said.

To win the race named after one of his own in Markovina would be the biggest thrill for the South Australian.

"It would be pretty special if I could win it. I'm 91 now and I would have loved to be over there, but I just had a major operation," he said.

The gelding out of Collectable has drawn one for the $24,000 feature with Jackie Barker set to pilot.

The Kyle Marshall-prepared Bach is looking for four consecutive wins and will likely start favourite, while Shepparton Pacing Cup winner, the Coutney Laker-trained Curly James, is the widest of the runners on the back row.

The TAB Markovina Free For All is set to go at 7.33pm.
